My Introduction to Dermalogica

When it comes to skincare, there isn’t a brand that gets more widespread recognition for the quality of their products than Dermalogica. As a budget beauty blogger,  I know that Dermalogica is on the pricier side of the skin care spectrum but with that being said, I’m not against high-end beauty products. I enjoy using premium brands as much as the next person. But I do expect them to perform better than their lower priced counterparts in order to justify going through the extra expense of buying them.

Dermalogica products are high performance, salon products. I’ve heard so many good things about the brand in general from a lot of different people. I’ve been getting very curious about their products and wondering what some of them could do for my skin.

Eager to try a product or two from Dermalogica, I knew the next question is what do I want to try first!

This is a good question to ask yourself when getting acquainted with the brand because Dermalogica offers a substantial range of individual products that can be used in conjunction with other ones to create a complete skin care system. These skincare systems are mostly themed according to generalised age requirements and targeted solutions for specific skin care concerns.

From the multitude of highly rated and specialist Dermalogica products available, choosing just one or two products out of an array of appealing possibilities is no decision! That’s why it’s a good thing that Dermalogica products are highly targeted towards addressing particular issues as it’s useful to choose the products that tackle the skin care concerns that are most important to you.

Dermalogica: The Importance of Skin Care Samples

When there are a lot of products to choose between, it’s nice to try several options before making a decision about what to buy. That’s where samples come in and it’s another thing that Dermalogica do very well as a brand. They understand that it’s good to try before you buy, especially when Dermalogica products represent quite an investment. It’s so worth getting hold of a few samples and being happy with the products before purchasing any full-size equivalents.

Breakout fixer? Dermalogica Clear Start Breakout Clearing Cooling Masque

Earlier this year, I was struggling with some serious acne breakouts. My experiences have left me on a mission to discover and implement some more targeted skincare products into my skincare routine that can treat any breakouts. I want to use products that reduce the frequency and severity of any acne eruptions.

The Clear Start Breakout Clearing Cooling Masque from Dermalogica appealed to me as it sounds just the sort of product that my skin could potentially benefit from. Even though I’m definitely not a teenager anymore, my skin still likes to act like it is!

Ingredients 

It contains 2% salicylic acid and this active ingredient is useful in treating mild acne. It’s an ingredient that my skin typically responds well to and does help clear up breakouts. It is, however, the sort of ingredient that needs regular and continued use to keep working.

The Dermalogica Clear Start Breakout Clearing Cooling Masque also contains camphor. This ingredient combines with Aloe Vera is probably what gives this mask it’s cooling and soothing sensation. The menthol is very calming and aloe vera is also known to be good at reducing redness/irritation.

This face mask has a phenomenal range of natural ingredients that sound almost like something from a recipe book rather than the back of a beauty product! It’s got rosemary, thyme, turmeric, basil and liquorice in it. They all sound like ingredients with strong anti-inflammatory properties so that may be why they are in the mix.

What is it like to use?

The Dermalogica Clear Start Breakout Clearing Cooling Masque has a gel-like texture that’s light and smooth; it actually reminds me of k-style beauty products. A slightly sticky veneer is all that remains on the skin until it’s rinsed off. So it’s neither a mask that dries or peels off. It’s more like a serum or cream.

There is a menthol/herbal type of fragrance to this face mask that is very reminiscent of Vicks VapoRub. Personally, this is a fragrance that I enjoy but it may be a little bit off-putting if you don’t like menthol. I actually prefer it over a chemical or highly perfumed scent.

Final Thoughts on the Dermalogica Clear Start Breakout Clearing Cooling Masque

I think that this face mask does a good job of managing current acne breakouts, reducing the incidence of future breakouts as well as soothing and refreshing irritated skin.

I can’t really say how well this mask works with continued use but based on my first impressions from the couple of sample sachets I’ve tried, I would say it would more than likely be very useful for keeping skin clear in the long run. This could be a great product if you already know that your skin responds well to a salicylic acid as an acne treatment.

I do think this product probably has limitations in terms of how useful it could be for treating more severe breakouts. I think it’s probably best suited to quite mild acne breakouts as more serious breakouts could require high doses of active ingredients.
