Wonderland Studio Finish Primer

Review: Wonderland Studio Finish Primer

Primer is one of those products I’m often tempted to skip. That’s fine because for me, less makeup equals less breakouts. But let’s face it, I’m just being lazy and looking for a good excuse to not do something!

In truth, I love wearing makeup. In fact, I usually like to go all out and do a proper job when I’m actually taking the time and trouble to apply it.

One thing I’ve noticed recently is that I really can’t get away without using a Primer on those full face makeup days. In fact, I don’t know how I ever managed without one! I’m definitely a Primer convert now.

Finding a good primer that suits you is key.

I had some bad experiences early on that put me off. Then I tried Max Factor’s FaceFinity and it gave me hope at last. Fast forward a few years and I now have a good few decent primers in my life.

Wonderland Studio Finish Primer

This Wonderland Makeup Studio Finish Primer is definitely one of those primers that is worth taking the time and effort to apply when you want a lasting base and a  finish. One of the things I like about it is that I think it would suit most skin types.

I was worried it might be too greasy or heavy for my skin. It’s actually silky and lightweight, so no worries there. It settles in almost instantly and creates a smooth base for my foundation.

This primer is actually a good one for some basic oil control. It really seems to diminish the appearance of shine, especially around the T-zone. This means less blotting and powdering throughout the day: Great when it’s going to be a long day and a complete makeup meltdown is the last thing you want or need!

I always pair it with a mattifying, oil free foundation and a mattifying powder to really control oil and shine. I really like to pair this Primer with Revlon’s Colorstay Foundation for Oily/Combination Skin. But you will probably already have your own favourite foundation and any that are oil free would likely pair extremely well with this. It has never caused my foundation to oxidise or turn three shades darker half way through the day!

This Primer is great for those of us who like Benefit’s Porefessional or Smash box’s Photofinish Primer. I would describe the formula as being very similar to the Smashbox one: It’s not a typical slippy silicone formula; it’s more grippy and velvety but still silky smooth.

I think it effectively helps to minimise the look of larger pores and fine lines by filling them in.

A word of caution: Full coverage base makeup and breakouts

I think you need to be careful about removing all of your makeup properly when your fix it firmly in place on your skin with products such as this. Primer doesn’t usually allow the skin to breathe very well as it’s very job means that it has to fill pores in and coat the skin to create a smooth, even layer.

It seems that the very act of wearing makeup itself, with the possible exception of natural mineral makeup, causes an increased number of breakouts for many of us. Especially when said makeup includes a full coverage, multilayered base.

That’s honestly just my non scientific feelings on the matter, based on personal experience. It may not be the case for everyone but for me at least, less makeup is definitely something that I can strongly correlate with less breakouts.

I’d say unless you’re wearing this primer alone to enhance the natural look of your skin, save it for full face makeup days. It’s a great product to enhance the look and longevity of your favourite full coverage base products. Perfect for when you’re really going all out on your makeup look or just for whenever you want to look your very best!

I’d say that to me, this is both a luxurious and a functional product. It’s a straight forward primer that does what it claims to do. There is something special about it though: there’s the sense of a luxury product and it makes an excellent dupe for the pricier Smashbox Photo Finish Primer.
